Excellent inference, faultless SPAG, and attention to detail were three of the requirements which struck me while marking the 11Plus exam. We can encourage candidates to read widely, employ complex vocabulary and tackle daunting reasoning problems yet if their spelling and grammar are not up to scratch - in both the Reading and the Writing - then valuable marks will be lost. Also, if Maths answers are given in analogue instead of digital or in the wrong unit of measurement, those elusive marks will not be theirs. 

So, in response we must make students aware of attention to detail in both the Maths and English: one word answers or missing decimal points just won't cut it. Regular practice of exam style questions, with clear modelling and precise feedback will lead them towards success.
